Cam York signed a five-year, $25.75 million contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday. It has an average annual value of $5.15 million.
The 24-year-old restricted free agent defenseman had 17 points (four goals, 13 assists) and averaged 20:47 of ice time in 66 games for the Flyers last season.
"I love Philadelphia and it's my home and where I'm comfortable and I want to be there as long as I could," York said Tuesday. "I wanted to stay and be a part of what's going on here. It's a really exciting time to join and be a part of this really good group moving forward."
York admitted that he didn't play to his standards last season after he set NHL career bests in goals (10), assists (20) and points (30) in 2023-24. He's excited for a fresh start under new coach Rick Tocchet and being more of an offensive presence in 2025-26.
"I feel offensively I have so much more to give," he said. "I feel like I have a lot of skill that other defensemen don't have. I feel like when I'm on my game, I'm a really versatile guy. ... I think defensively I try to do the little things as best I can, block shots, defend as hard as I can. But I think for me, just continue to take little strides in every area, try to improve my 200-foot game. But offensively I have a lot more to give there. I think we'll see better numbers hopefully there next year."
Some of those numbers could come from more time on the power play. He played a total of 9:36 on the power play last season; he had averaged more than 2:05 of power-play time per game in three of his first four NHL seasons.
"I've been a power-play guy pretty much my entire career, at every level," York said. "Last year I wasn't. I think when you're on the power play and you're getting more puck touches, more ice time, obviously your offensive numbers will go up. ... I feel like my lateral movement on the blue line is good, and I have a good shot."
York, selected by the Flyers in the first round (No. 14) of the 2019 NHL Draft, has 77 points (19 goals, 58 assists) in 235 NHL games.
"We are very happy to have Cam under contract for the next five years and be a main piece on our blue line," Flyers general manager Daniel Briere said Monday. "Cam has been a workhorse for our team over the last few seasons. We're excited by his development and look forward to his continued growth and emergence as a young leader within our group."
